Your Ford vehicle’s VIN is its DNA; every car’s number is the thing that makes it identifiable and utterly unique. There are plenty of reasons why you may need to check your VIN at some point, so here at Bill Colwell Ford, we’ve put together a quick guide that shows how these numbers work and where you can find one on your Ford car, truck, or SUV.
What is a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)?
The VIN is a 17-number sequence stamped onto your Ford vehicle to serve as a means of identifying and it and keeping track of its history. Every VIN is entirely unique and required for registering a new or pre-owned vehicle purchase because the companies that handle those registrations are responsible for validating those purchases. They do so by using their databases of VINs.
Where Is the VIN on a Ford Car?
Bill Colwell Ford customers can typically find their vehicle’s VIN in one of three places:
- The car door. More specifically, the VIN is often located on the frame of the driver’s side door.
- The windshield. The lower, driver’s side corner of the windshield typically displays the number.
- Vehicle records. Your point of purchase documents, insurance card, and registration forms all should have the VIN recorded.
Adding the VIN to the FordPass™ App
Once you’ve located your VIN, you can either enter it by hand or scan it into the FordPass™ smartphone app. This gives you a fourth place to record your VIN, allowing you quick and easy access to it wherever you are.
As always, if you need help with your VIN number, contact our Hudson Ford dealer and ask for help. It should be easy to locate, but if you have any questions, never hesitate to give us a call!
