Ford Super Duty Powertrains

The three trucks in the Ford Super Duty series share the same engine and transmission choices. There are two gas engines, one a 385 horsepower, 6.2 liter, V8 engine, and the other a 7.3L V8 engine capable of 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. The alternative is a 6.7L turbocharged PowerStroke® V8 diesel engine that backs its 450 horsepower with 1,050 lb-ft of torque.

So why choose different Ford trucks, and how are their capabilities different even if the engines are the same?

Each truck's construction (especially its frame, axles, and cab and box choices) influences weight ratings. So for the Ford F-250, for instance, you can combine the 6.7L engine with a 4x4 driveline and regular cab for a best-in-class 20,000 pound max conventional towing capacity; when properly equipped, it also offers 22,800 pounds gooseneck or fifth-wheel towing, or maximum gas towing of 19,500 pounds. Payload is equally generous, a maximum of 3,940 pounds.

Power isn't all these trucks offer.

The Ford F-350 shares Ford Co-Pilot360™ driver assist aids with other new Ford trucks, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, Pro Trailer Backup Assist™, and blind spot monitoring that also encompasses the trailer.

Trailering is a healthy 21,000 pounds (32,000 fifth wheel/gooseneck), and payload an equally impressive 7,033 pounds maximum.

You won't find as many trim choices in the new Ford F-450, but there's a lot there to make up for it. Not least of these, in common with the rest of the lineup, is advanced tech like the Ford SYNC3® infotainment system, which offers Android Auto™, Apple CarPlay®, and even the capability to expand with navigation and telematics. And did we mention the 6,288 pounds of maximum payload, or 24,200 pound maximum towing capacity?
